UMBC VOLLEYBALL PLACES SECOND AT WILLIAM & MARY INVITATIONAL

Williamsburg, Va. – The UMBC Retrievers (4-4) placed second at the William & Mary Invitational over the weekend, falling to host school and tournament champion William & Mary (4-3) by a final of 3-1 (23-30, 30-20, 30-32, 23-30) in the tournament finale.  UMBC in the first match of the day defeated Loyola (Md.) (0-6),3-0 (30-16, 30-28, 30-20).  Earning all-tournament honors for the Retrievers was Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) with  55 kills and a hitting percentage of .375 in the tournament and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) with 128 assists in the tournament’s three matches.

 

Against the Tribe Berman recorded a career-high 22 kills to lead UMBC.  Gross finished with 47 assists in the four-game match while Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) finished with her second double-double of the tournament with 17 kills and 14 digs.  Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) finished with a team-high 19 digs.

 

Leading the way for the Tribe was Megan Hector with 15 kills and Amy Owens finished with 53 assists.

 

In the first match of the day UMBC defeated Loyola (Md.) 3-0 (30-16, 30-28, 30-20) extending their win streak to four consecutive matches and setting up the tournament championship match against the Tribe.

 

Teoh led UMBC in with 19 kills and a .326 hitting percentage.  Teoh recorded a double-double in the game with 10 digs as well.  Other double-digit kill leaders for the Retrievers was Berman with 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage and Jessie Folk with 11 kills and a .478 hitting percentage.  Gross recorded 44 assists and Skala led all Retrievers with 13 digs.     

 

The Retrievers in the first game trailed 11-8 when Megan Gross took over serving.  Gross led UMBC on an 11-0 run and a 19-11 lead as Berman recorded four kills in that stretch and a team-high seven in game one. 

 

In game two UMBC was down 28-26 when the duo of Teoh and Gross emerged as Teoh recorded two kills and Gross tallied one kill, two assists and an assisted block on the game-winning point as the Retrievers closed out the game with four-straight points for a 30-28 win. 

 

UMBC carried the momentum through the third game with 21 team kills, nine from Teoh, to take the game 30-20, and the match 3-0.

 

The Retrievers return to action at Morgan State on Wednesday, September 15, at 7 p.m.
