RETRIEVERS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO THREE STRAIGHT WITH 3-0 WIN OVER HAMPTON IN OPENING GAME OF WILLIAM & MARY INVITATIONAL

Williamsburg, Va. - The UMBC Volleyball team (3-3) won their third consecutive match by defeating Hampton University (0-5) on Friday afternoon in the Retrievers opening match of the William & Mary Invitational by a final count of 3-0 (30-24, 30-19, 30-16).  The Retrievers were led by Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) for the second straight game as the redshirted freshman recorded a match-high 17 kills on .626 hitting percentage. 

The Retrievers never trailed in any of the three games after going ahead 2-1 in each game.  In game one it was Berman who did the most damage, connecting on 7-of-9 attacks for kills with one error, hitting .667 in the game.  Junior setter Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) recorded 17 assists in the opening game as 20 of UMBC’s 30 points came from kills.  UMBC captured that game 30-24.

The Retrievers carried their momentum into the second game as Berman recorded six more kills on nine attacks while Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale) recorded three of her match-high seven service aces to lead UMBC to the 30-19 game two victory.

The story in game three was Retriever senior Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) who served UMBC to seven-consecutive points (two service aces) as the Retrievers ran out ahead 7-1 in the game and never looked back, striking the final blow with a 30-16 game three victory.  Skala ended the game with her seventh service ace of the evening.

For the game Berman recorded 17 kills on 24 attacks with two errors for a .625 hitting percentage.  Gross recorded 37 assists.

Hampton was led by Sydnee Keel with five kills and Erin Hayes with four kills. 

The Retrievers take on Loyola (Md.) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and close out the tournament with host William & Mary at 7 p.m.
