UMBC VOLLEYBALL RELEASES 2004 SCHEDULE

The UMBC Volleyball team and Head Coach Greg Giovanazzi announced their 2004 schedule today. The women’s volleyball slate includes five dates with NCAA Tournament participants last year and three tournaments. The Retrievers’ season begins on Sept. 1 when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to play Xavier and open at home on Sept. 7 with St. Francis, Pa., at UMBC RAC Arena.
“This year’s schedule is both demanding and challenging which in turn will give us the necessary experience to compete within the conference and for a bid in the four-team league tournament,” said Giovanazzi. “We have a number of tough programs to play this year and we look forward to the start of the season.”
The Retrievers tough competition includes five dates against NCAA Tournament participants last year. Among the team’s the Retrievers will face will be Penn State and Cincinnati at their respective home tournaments, Manhattan and two dates against last season America East Conference Tournament Champions New Hampshire.
The Retrievers will spend their first week of the season in Cincinnati, Ohio as they will take on Xavier to open the season on Sept. 1 and will compete over the weekend at the Bearcat Invitational.
UMBC will compete in three tournaments as they travel to the William & Mary Tournament from Sept. 10-11 and the Nittany Lion Tournament from Sept. 17-18 in addition to the Bearcat Invitational.
The Retrievers open their conference slate with five matches on the road before returning home for a five-match homestand. As regulated by the conference, the Retrievers will face each of the other seven America East Conference opponents twice in a home and away series.
The Retrievers conclude their regular season with home dates against Northeastern and Hartford on Fri., Nov. 12 and Sat., Nov. 13 respectively. The America East Conference Championships will take place the following weekend at the No. 1 seed’s home court following the end of the regular season.
