MAINE AVENGES EARLIER SEASON LOSES WITH 3-0 WIN OVER UMBC VOLLEYBALL

Baltimore, Md. – The University of Maine (13-18, 4-7 AEC) avenged two loses earlier in the season to UMBC (14-16, 3-8 AEC) with a three-set sweep (30-16, 30-26, 30-16) of the Retrievers in America East Volleyball action on Friday evening at UMBC RAC Arena. Maine hit .367 as a team including hitting over .500 percent in two games to knock off the Retrievers.
In game one, Maine hit .515 as a team including getting four kills on five attacks from Leah Guidinger and six kills on eight attacks by Brittany Howe to pace the Black Bears to a 30-16 set one victory. The Black Bears also recorded six blocks as a team in the set as UMBC hit just .081.
In game two the Retrievers fell behind to the Black Bears again but made a strong run through the middle of the set as Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan), who entered the week ranking 21st in the nation in assists at 0.60 per game, took over serving for the Retrievers with the score 16-12 in favor of the Black Bears. Waclawiak served two aces and pulled UMBC from four down to go up by three at 19-16. The Retrievers, however, couldn’t retain their lead as the Black Bears came rumbling back and took the 30-26 set two victory.
After hitting .125 as a team in game two, the Black Bears returned to their form in game one, hitting an even .500 with 20 kills, two errors on 36 attacks in game three to cruise to the three-set win with a 30-16 final game victory.
For the match the Black Bears were led by Guidenger with 16 kills and Howe with 13. Pacing the way for the Retrievers was Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bujit Sports Academy) with 15 kills and 10 digs and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) with 24 setter assists.
The Retrievers return to action for Senior Night at RAC Arena on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they play host to New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
