Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC Retrievers (14-14, 3-7 AEC) fell to the .500 mark on the season after Albany (22-7, 7-3 AEC) rallied from two sets down to complete the three-set turnaround and defeat the Retrievers (23-30, 27-30, 30-26, 30-18, 15-12) in America East Volleyball action on Saturday night in UMBC RAC Arena.
The Retrievers jumped out to a 1-0 set lead much to the credit of Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Jennifer Davis (Ontario, Canada/Sir Allen Macnab). Skala took over with the score 18-16, serving the Retrievers to four straight points and a 22-16 advantage. Moments later Davis took over with the score 23-17, serving three-straight points, including two service aces to put the Retrievers up 26-17 as UMBC took the set 30-23. Davis in the set hit .556 with five kills on nine attacks with no errors.
The second set went back-and-forth as the majority of the set was played with neither team more than two points ahead with the score tied at 26-26 late in the game. The Retrievers than grabbed two points to go up 28-26 and won the set on a Skala serving ace to take the second set 30-27. In the second set both teams produced strong hitting as the Great Danes hit .366 as a team and UMBC .282.
The Great Danes, however, wouldn’t go quietly jumping out to a 13-8 advantage in the third set before UMBC rallied to tie the match 26-26. Albany responded with four-straight points to end the set and take the 30-26 win.
Albany continued to rally from behind in the fourth set, hitting .370 as a team with 23 kills to send the match to a fifth and final set with a 30-18 set four victory.
In the final set, the Great Danes merged ahead midway through the to take a 10-6 lead and then held off a late charge by the Retrievers to win 15-12 and complete the three-set rally.
For the match, Albany’s Eileen Rodriguez recorded 34 kills and 17 digs while Blair Buchanan had 39 assists and Jill Dombrowski dished out 31 helpers. Shelby Goldman added 22 kills for the Great Danes, who had four players in double figures in kills.
The Retrievers were led by the trio of Davis, Skala and Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bujit Sports Complex) all of which had 12 kills and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) who recorded 37 assists.
The Retrievers return to action when they travel to local non-conference foe Towson on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. prior to playing host to Maine on Friday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. and New Hampshire on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
