TEOH AND GROSS TAKE TWO OF THREE AMERICA EAST VOLLEYBALL WEEKLY ACCOLADES

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC women’s volleyball team (13-8, 2-1) wrapped up a big week of action with junior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy) earning America East Baden Player of the Week and sophomore Megan Gross (Mont Clair, Va./Forest Park) being named America East Baden Setter of the Week, her second setter of the week award this year. The Retrievers went 2-1 on the week as they opened America East Conference play with three home games at RAC Arena.
Teoh put on a stellar performance this past week averaging 6.00 kills per game with a hitting percentage of .281. Teoh also added 15 assists, three service aces, 27 digs (2.25 per game) and nine total blocks. On the season, Teoh is averaging 4.94 kills per game and is over the 1,000 attack mark with 1,036 attack attempts on the year. She has a .224 hitting percentage and averages 2.59 digs per game.
Gross in 12 games (three matches) handed out 149 assists, a 12.42 assist per game average, scored 12 kills and recorded 35 digs and six total blocks. Gross with 931 assists is closing in fast on 1,000 assists for the season, a mark she could break this weekend with two matches against conference opponents. She is averaging 11.35 assists per game and 2.90 digs per game on the year.
Teoh and Gross opened the week against Binghamton with two strong performances as Teoh recorded a match-high 28 kills with eight digs, an ace and four blocks and Gross dished out 59 helpers to pace the Retrievers to the five set win. With the Retrievers down a set to Binghamton and behind 26-21 in the fourth set, Teoh took over serving for UMBC, leading the team to five-straight points as UMBC pulled out the fourth set, sending the match to a fifth and final set where UMBC captured the win.
Versus Hartford, Gross piled on 42 more assists to her season total as the Retrievers downed Hartford. Gross averaged 14 assists per game in the win over Hartford while adding on three kills and nine digs. Teoh recorded another match-high in kills, this time scoring 19 kills with a .432 hitting percentage as the Retrievers swept the Hawks in three sets, 3-0. Teoh also added five assists four digs and two blocks in that match along with two aces.
In the week ending match, Gross had her fourth straight 40-plus assist match, recording 48 assists against the Stony Brook. Teoh, for the third match in a row, led all players with 25 kills, hitting .274 against Seawolves. Teoh had five assists and a team-high 15 digs in the losing effort, 3-1. The Retrievers were down by two sets to the Seawolves when Teoh came up with a huge game three to pull the Retrievers back into the match, hitting .571 with eight kills in the third set to send UMBC and Stony Brook to a game four where the Seawolves were able to finish off the Retrievers.
UMBC returns to action this week with two America East matches. The Retrievers travel to Albany on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. before heading to Northeastern for another 7 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 18.
