UMBC VOLLEYBALL STAYS PERFECT IN AMERICA EAST WITH 3-0 WIN OVER HARTFORD
10/10/2003
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers (13-7, 2-0) swept Hartford (8-10, 0-2) in three sets, 30-21, 30-19, 30-19, in America East volleyball action on Friday night at UMBC RAC Arena. The Retrievers won their fifth straight game and ninth game out of the past 11 they have played.
The Retrievers started game one on a high note, hitting .500 as a team with 21 kills in game one. Junior Jocelyn Toeh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy) recorded eight kills in the set while sophomore Megan Gross (Mont Clair, Va./Forest Park) dished out 18 assists en route to her match-high 42.
After taking the first game, the Hawks looked like they were going to make games two and three tough for the Retrievers, jumping out to an 8-1 advantage in the second game and running off the first six points to go up 6-0 in game three before UMBC strung together a couple of runs to sweep the two sets.
In game two the Retrievers looked Teoh again as she hit .545 in the second set with six kills while in game three much of the credit went to Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) who took over serving midway through the third set to pace the Retrievers to victory. Waclawiak, who entered the week ranked second in the conference in service aces per game, rotated to the server spot with the score tied at 14-14. The Retrievers under Waclawiak’s serve, scored nine unanswered points, including two service aces by Waclawiak, to forge ahead 23-14 and go on for the 30-19 final game victory.
Waclawiak finished the match with four aces, seven kills and a block while Teoh had 19 kills for a .432 hitting percentage and graduate student Jennifer Davis (Ontario, Canada/Sir Allen Macnab) hit .333 and recorded six blocks.
The Hawks were led by Stephanie Volckers with 15 kills and Brianne Paulson with 26 assists.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. when they conclude their three-game homestand as they look to move to 3-0 in the conference and win their sixth straight game against America East opponent Stony Brook.
