UMBC OUTLASTS MAINE, 3-2, IN OPENING MATCH OF UCONN VOLLEYBALL AUTUMN CLASSIC

Storrs, Conn. – The UMBC Retrievers (8-6) outlasted the Maine Black Bears (6-8), 3-2, in women’s volleyball action Friday evening at the UConn Volleyball Autumn Classic. The Retrievers roared back after losing the first game to take a 2-1 set advantage but fell in the fourth set before taking the fifth and final game to win the five-set thriller.
Game one saw the Retrievers get down early as they trailed Maine through the first half of the set until four straight points while Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) was serving tied the game at 14-14. The Black Bears responded with three-straight points of their own and never let UMBC back within two points to take the first game, 30-23.
In game two the Retrievers fell behind early again as they were down 15-9 until Jocelyn Teoh (Selangor, Malaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy) served six-straight points to notch the game at 15-15. The Retrievers continued to rack up the points as the service made its way back around to Teoh, who finished off the Black Bears in game two with three consecutive points to give UMBC a 30-24 second set victory.
Following the lead of Teoh and graduate student Jennifer Davis (Hamilton, Ontario/Sir Aleen Macnab), the Retrievers hit .250 with 15 kills in game three to take a 30-21 win and a 2-1 set advantage over the Black Bears.
The Black Bears, however, rallied in game four to tie the match back at 2-2, scoring six-straight points and recording 15 kills to take a 30-25 win.
Much like the first four sets, the close action was carried in the fifth and decisive set as the two teams were tied 12-12, before the Retrievers scored three of the final four points to take the 15-13 fifth set win.
Sophomore Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park), who was named America East Setter of the Week, totaled 57 assists in the match. Teoh led the Retrievers with 22 kills and 19 digs and Davis hit .273 with 19 kills in the match.
The Retrievers conclude competition at the UConn Autumn Classic with two matches on tap for Saturday, September 27. UMBC takes on host school Connecticut at 12 p.m. and finishes with Florida Atlantic with a start time of 5 p.m.
