Baltimore, Md. – UMBC women’s volleyball sophomore Megan Gross (Mont Clair, Va./Forest Park) was named America East Baden Setter of the Week for the week ending September 21, 2003. The Retrievers’ top setter went over the 500-assist mark on the season by dishing out 144 assists in three games over the weekend at the Villanova Invitational.
Gross started her stellar weekend in the Friday night opener against Manhattan as her 48 assists, 10 digs and three kills helped lead the Retrievers to a 3-1 victory over the Jaspers. Gross continued to power the Retriever squad in day two of competition, racking up 61 set assists in the Retrievers’ come-from-behind five-set win over Penn, 3-2. Gross also tallied 16 digs and three kills on eight attempts (.375) in the win.
In the final game of the tournament Gross handed out 35 more assists and scored 10 digs in a losing effort to host school Villanova. Her 144 assists in the tournament brings her season total to 543 on the year, a team best. Gross also leads the Retrievers in digs with 131 on the season.
This is Gross’ first conference accolades and the second in as many weeks for the Retrieves. Last week graduate student Jennifer Davis (Ontario, Canada/Sir Allen Macnab) earned Baden Player of the Week honors.
The Retrievers return to action this weekend when they travel to the UConn Autumn Classic for three games against fellow tournament participants Maine, Florida Atlantic and host school Connecticut. Action begins on September 26 when the Retrievers take on Maine at 5 p.m. and concludes on September 27 with matches against UConn at 12 p.m. and Florida Atlantic at 5 p.m.
