Volleyball Hits the Road for a Pair of Conference Matches this Weekend

The UMBC Volleyball team will travel to New Hampshire (Friday at 7 p.m.) and UMass Lowell (Sunday at 12 p.m.) this weekend to take on the Wildcats and River Hawks.

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC (10-7, 2-1 America East) is coming off of a win in their conference home opener against Binghamton on Friday in a 3-1 match (21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23). Freshmen Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) and Elayna Williams (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) provided 16 and 10 kills respectively in the match, with Freeman also providing nine digs.  Junior Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) added in 12 kills and eight blocks, and sophomore Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo./Grand View) recorded a career-high 10 blocks.

Freeman, named Co-America East Rookie of the Week, holds the team lead in kills, with 170 on the year, while junior Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) has a team-best 449 assists.  Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) leads the team defensively with 241 digs.

Scouting the Wildcats:

New Hampshire (8-10, 3-1 AE) enters the weekend after winning their conference home opener last Friday against Stony Brook (25-18, 23-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-11).  This was their third five-set win in conference.

On the season, Kennedi Smith and Gabri Olhava pace the offense with 208 and 176 kills respectively.  Smith was named America East Player of the Week for her 18-kill performance while hitting .317.  Emma Patlovich has a team-best 389 assists, and Logan Welti leads the team on the defenseive end with 289 digs.

Scouting the River Hawks:

UMass Lowell (5-12, 0-4 AE) comes into the weekend after dropping their Saturday night match against Stony Brook in straight sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-22).  They will take on Hartford on Friday night before the Retrievers come to town on Sunday.

Katherine Claybaugh leads the River Hawks on the offensive side with 190 kills, and is second on the team with 148 digs.  Lindsey Visvardis holds the team lead in digs with 272, while Delaney Mendez has recorded 340 assists on the year.

Inside the Matchups:

UMBC is 9-20 against New Hampshire all-time, losing the last meeting 3-1 last season.  The Retrievers are 8-0 all-time against the River Hawks, sweeping the last meeting 3-0.
