Volleyball Opens America East Play Friday Night at Hartford

The UMBC Volleyball team will travel to West Hartford, Connecticut this Friday to take on the Hartford Hawks in both team's America East Conference opener at 7 p.m.

The Retrievers open the conference season after being tabbed fourth in the preseason poll, while Hartford was voted sixth.

Scouting the Retrievers:

UMBC (8-6, 0-0) enters conference play riding a three-match winning streak, and have won seven of their last eight matches.  They come into the match after sweeping two-time defending MEAC champ Howard (25-19, 27-25, 25-21).

The Retrievers received ten kills each from senior Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) and freshman Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's).  Junior Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) led the match with 24 digs.

Watson currently leads the team with 188 digs from the libero position.  Junior Krytsia Negon leads the team in assists with 335 and averages 9.85 assists per set.

Freeman leads the team in kills with 133 on a team-high .289 hitting.  She also is coming off being named America East Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Scouting the Hawks:

Hartford (2-10, 0-0) is coming off a weekend tournament in Fairfield, Connecticut in which they went 1-2 with losses to Leigh and host Sacred Hart, while beating Brown in five sets.  Brittany Braun was named to the all-tournament team for her performance during the weekend.

Katy Henchy leads the Hawks offensively with 92 kills, while Astrid Mangual Duran has a team-high 187 assists.  Mangual Duran also has 92 digs for the season, which is second on the team behind Abby Nash's 96 digs.

Inside the Matchup:

UMBC holds the all-time advantage over Hartford, sporting a 25-5 record.  Hartford won the last meeting between the two, 3-1, last November at the RAC
