Lincoln, NE. – The UMBC Volleyball (1-5) team closed out play in the Ameritas Players Challenge by falling in straight sets to Oral Roberts (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon.
The first set was back-and-forth between both teams, as neither team held more than a two-point advantage until Oral Roberts (1-5) recorded the final four points.
The second set featured the Retrievers getting out to a 9-1 lead, including multiple kills from sophomore Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo./Grand View) and two aces from classmate Brooke Hayden (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore). The Golden Eagles responded quickly with a 9-1 run to even the set at 10-10. The Retrievers would battle back late in the set with kills from Mirabella, Reed, and Freeman, but ORU would eventually take the set
The Retrievers and Oral Roberts were tight in the third, and the set was tied at 23, but ORU scored the final two points of the set to take the match.
The Retrievers were led offensively by senior outside hitter Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) with a team high 10 kills, as well as nine kills from freshman outside hitter Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's). Redshirt junior setter Claudia Lopez also recorded a match high 31 assists, while classmate libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) recorded a match high 12 digs in the three-set contest.
The Retrievers are back in action on Tuesday at 7:00 PM, facing Coppin State at the RAC Arena in the team's home opener.
