Baltimore, Md. -- The UMBC Volleyball team (1-2) will be traveling to No.12 Nebraska for the Ameritas Player's Challenge tournament over the weekend. Also included in the tournament are Saint Mary's (Cal.) and Oral Roberts.
The Retrievers will play Nebraska and Saint Mary's College on Friday, September 1 at 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm, respectively. They will then finish the tournament against Oral Roberts at 12:30 pm on Saturday, September 2.
Scouting the Retrievers: UMBC was at the Maryland Invite last weekend that saw the team go 1-2. All matches went four sets, as they dropped the first match to host Maryland on Friday night, before splitting matches between Temple and Northeastern on Saturday. Junior Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) was named to the All-Tournament Team as well as being named America East Defensive Specialist of the Week while Claudia Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) was named the conference Setter of the Week.
Scouting the Huskers: Nebraska started the season ranked fifth in the nation, but dropped their first two matches of the season at the VERT Challenge in Gainesville Florida. They lost their first match to No.18 (now No.14) Oregon and then their second match to then No.12 (now No.3) Florida in five sets. Jazz Sweet leads the team in hitting percentage with a 34.9% and 30 kills.
Scouting the Gaels: Saint Mary's enters the weekend at 0-3 after competing in the Husky Invitational at then No.3 (now No.7) University of Washington. They dropped their first two matches in three sets, before dropping their last match to (RV) Pittsburgh in four sets. Sarah Chase leads the Gaels defensively as she sports 36 digs, and also adds 28 kills.
Scouting the Golden Eagles: Oral Roberts comes into the tournament sporting an 0-3 record after going winless at the Purdue Mortar Board tournament. They would drop the first two matches by three sets, before going five sets in a loss to Cleveland State. Laura Milos has a hitting percentage of 31.3% with 55 kills, and is second in digs with 21 to Tori Roe who has 36.
Inside the Matchups: The Retrievers will be facing all three opponents for the first time ever.
