CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC senior middle blocker Emily Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/Medina) was named the America East Player of the Week upon making her comeback after nearly a year off the court, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, classmate Mallory McIntyre (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) earned her second Setter of the Week mention in the last three weeks as UMBC went 4-0 last week, sweeping each opponent.
Sidelined nearly a year due to injury, Witsaman provided a spark right away for the Retrievers upon entering against local rival Towson. Using six kills from the senior, UMBC swept the Tigers in straight sets at the RAC Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Over the weekend at the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament, Witsaman paced the Retriever attack, sending down a team-best 28 kills on .500 hitting. She was also dominant at the net, turning away 13 total blocks for a 1.44 blocks per set average in the Retrievers' three wins.
McIntyre continued her stellar work as the Black and Gold's setter, now leading the conference with a 9.72 assists per set average. In addition, she has helped UMBC to a .222 hitting efficiency for the season, which also leads the league.
The senior started the week by dishing out 31 assists in the Retrievers' three-set sweep of Towson. Then, over the weekend, McIntyre equaled that total against St. Francis (Pa.) and raised her game even more with 34 assists against NJIT and 37 helpers against local rival Coppin State. The reigning America East Co-Setter of the Year sent out 133 assists on the week as the Retrievers hit .375.
The Retrievers have now garnered four conference awards this season, collecting the Player of the Week award in back-to-back weeks after senior Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) took home the honor last week.
UMBC returns to action this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Liberty and Georgetown at the Gold and Blue Players Challenge in Morgantown, W.Va. The Retrievers then finish the weekend by taking on tournament host West Virginia on Sunday.
