McIntyre Named America East Setter of the Week; Volleyball Opens 2013 Home Slate on Wednesday Against George Mason

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC senior captain Mallory McIntyre (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) has been selected as the America East Setter of the Week for the first week of the season, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.

This past weekend, McIntyre led UMBC to its first-ever win against in-state rival Maryland, dishing out 35 assists in the three-set sweep.  For the weekend at the season-opening GW/Nike Invitational, McIntyre handed out 97 helpers for a 9.70 assists per set average while also picking up 25 digs.

Last season, McIntyre earned Setter of the Week honors twice during the regular season as the Retrievers posted an 8-4 record in conference play, their best since joining the America East in 2003.  Following the season, she was chosen as the league's Co-Setter of the Year while garnering a spot on the America East All-Conference First Team.

Coming off of the team's first-ever victory over in-state rival Maryland at the season-opening GW/Nike Invitational, the UMBC volleyball team starts the home portion of its 2013 season on Wednesday against George Mason at the RAC Arena.  The contest is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start with live coverage provided on the America East Digital Network.

Scouting the Retrievers

The Retrievers (1-2) dropped their initial two matches down in the nation's capital, falling to SEC-foe Ole Miss in four sets and then getting swept by tournament host George Washington.  UMBC regrouped quickly, though, and came back in their final match to sweep the Terps for the program's first win against Maryland in 11 contests.

Sophomores Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) and Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) notched 11 and ten kills, respectively, while senior setter Mallory McIntyre handed out 35 assists in the win.  Freshman libero Casey Griffith (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) registered ten digs in the win for her third straight match with double-digit digs.

For the weekend, Mlemchukwu recorded 27 kills and three blocks to be named to the All-Tournament Team.  McIntyre, meanwhile, dished out 97 assists in the three contests for a 9.70 assists per set average.  Senior Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S.McLaughlin) transitioned well back to a hitter spot where she knocked down 26 kills and picked up 26 digs on opening weekend.

Scouting George Mason

The Patriots (0-3) dropped their first match of the season to Georgetown at home in four sets on Friday, and then were swept by Howard and American on Saturday at the D.C. Volleyball Challenge.

Senior outside hitter Lana Zonjic led the way in the opener versus Georgetown, putting down 17 kills and picking up 13 digs while freshman hitter Jessie Greenslade also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.  For the weekend, Zonjic put away 39 kills while scooping up 33 digs and Greenslade totaled 24 kills and 23 digs.

Senior Tori Price spread the ball around as setter, sending out 93 assists in the three matches.  She recorded a double-double in the loss to Georgetown with 42 assists and ten digs, and nearly earned a triple-double with nine total blocks.

All-Time Series

George Mason leads the all-time series with UMBC, 20-5, following last year's five-set win in Fairfax, Va.  The Patriots have won three straight in the series after UMBC won back-to-back meetings during the 1998 season.  The two squads first met in 1974 with George Mason sweeping the two-set contest.

In last year's match, Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and Ali Loynachan both registered double-doubles, but it was not enough as the hosts outlasted the Retrievers in five sets, clinching the final frame by taking six of the final eight points for a 15-11 win.  Lolanda Owokoniran paced Mason with 13 kills while Laura Spencer (12 kills, 13 digs) and Price (52 assists, 12 digs) each notched double-doubles.
