Vadim Rubin joined the Retrievers’ volleyball staff as an assistant coach in August 2012.
Rubin comes to the staff after coaching at the high school and club level for the past six years. In addition, he has served as the captain for UMBC’s club men’s volleyball team since 2008.
Last season Rubin helped guide the Retrievers to an 8-4 mark in America East play, the team’s best since joining the league in 2003. In addition, UMBC earned a trip to its fifth-straight conference championship tournament.
While completing his degree at UMBC, Rubin coached in the local volleyball club community, most notably for the Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club, where he served as the head coach for the 15U and 16U squads each of the past two seasons. Also at that time, the Sandy Spring, Md., native guided Reservoir High School’s junior varsity team to the Huntingtown Invitational championship and the number one ranking in the country among JV squads.
After leading Sherwood High School to back-to-back men’s volleyball Divisional Championships in 2005 and 2006, Rubin matriculated at UMBC and received a Bachelor’s degree in history in 2012. He is currently enrolled back at UMBC to complete a second degree, this one in Asian Studies.
