Volleyball Defeats Morgan State, Falls to Towson in Final Day of Battle of Baltimore

BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team finished Day Two of the Battle of Baltimore with the same result as Day One, as the Retrievers split two matches Saturday. UMBC (2-2) defeated Morgan State, 3-0, in the final match of the day after dropping a 3-0 decision to Towson earlier in the day.


Junior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) was named to the All-Tournament Team, after leading the team with a .248 hitting percentage and 15 total blocks.


The Retrivers, who outhit the Bears .293 to .188 on their way to a 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 victory, were led by freshmen Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate), who hit 14 kills, and Emily Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/Medina), who hit .400 with eight kills and only two errors. Fellow freshman Rebecca Garrigues (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) started her first collegiate match, added 18 assists and nine digs.


Senior Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Washington/AG West Black Hills) had a game-high two service aces, while freshman Hallie Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) had a game-high 11 digs.


In the first match of the day, the Retrievers hit .069 to Towson's .350 as the Tigers won 25-18, 25-20 and 25-15.


Hoeks led UMBC with six kills and eight digs, while junior Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wisc./Kenosha Tremper) had 15 assists.


The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they play host to George Washington at the RAC Arena at 6 p.m.
