Freshman Amanda Deller

BOSTON—The UMBC women’s track and field team, picked to finish eighth in the conference, exceeded expectations and placed fifth in the 2010 America East Indoor Championships. Freshman Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), who placed third in the weight throw on Friday, earned gold in the shot put Saturday in Boston.

Deller won with a throw of 13.75m (45’1.5”), while junior Chrissy Robinson (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) earned silver with a mark of 13.06m (42’10.25”).

Senior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) earned silver in the 55-meter dash in 7.12, while sophomore Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) took the bronze in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.17.

Senior Sara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University), a day after setting the school record in the 5,000-meter run, finished third in the 3,000-meter run in 9:53.32 and fourth in the 1-mile run  in 4:55.21, just 21 one-hundredths of a second over the UMBC mark.

Albany won the meet with 168.5 points, followed by Boston University (162), New Hampshire (107.5), Maine (106), UMBC (67), Vermont (60), Binghamton (53), Stony Brook (34) and Hartford (21).

The Retrievers return to action March 6 for the IC4A/ECAC Championships back in Boston.
