GREENSBORO, N.C. – UMBC senior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) earned a top-25 slot in the shot put and sophomore Thor Serafenas (Olney, Md./Good Counsel/Clemson) moved up 11 spots hammer throw as the Retriever track and field teams concluded participation at the NCAA East Preliminaries, Saturday at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Bell Track at Aggie Stadium.
Competing at the regional meet for the second-consecutive year, Deller, an eight-time America East shot put champion, finished 24th overall in the competition on Saturday. The senior competed in flight one of four and recorded a top toss of 14.49m (47'6.5"), her third-best of the season. Last year Deller took 29th-place at the meet in Jacksonville, Fla.
The senior finishes her career at UMBC having won the shot put event at each of the eight conference meets in which she participated (indoor and outdoor). She holds the second-best toss in school history indoor and outdoor, trailing only NCAA Champion and three-time Olympian Cleopatra Borel in both.
Serafenas, meanwhile, jumped from his 48th-seed entering the weekend, up into the top-40. The sophomore took eighth in flight one of three with a toss of 53.81m (176'6"), and finished 37th overall. In his first season in Baltimore, Serafenas broke the UMBC record in the event at the Big Dawg invitational with a heave of 56.85m (186'6"), and then bettered it at the IC4A meet (57.26m; 187'10") to advance to the NCAA regional competition.
The UMBC track and field team now looks forward to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. where sophomore Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and freshman Vincent Rentzsch (Orianenburg, Germany) will compete for the Black and Gold in the 100m dash and javelin, respectively. This marks the first time in school history that the Retrievers will send multiple athletes to the national meet, which will be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field on June 5-8.
