Women's Track and Field Finishes Second at Maryland Invitational, Men Secure Crown

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—School records and gold medals highlighted UMBC track and field's performance at the Maryland Invitational, concluding with the men running home with the title with 184 points and the women securing second place with 132 points.  

 

Senior Sara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) broke a UMBC record for the second consecutive week, smashing the 3,000-meter record and winning gold in 9:44.93, over 16 seconds faster than the 27-year old record. Parkinson broke the 5,000-meter run record at the Colonial Relays last weekend.

 

Senior Chris Snyder (McConnellsburg, Pa./McConnellsburg) broke the school record in the 3,000-meter run, finishing fourth in a time of 8:28.46, while sophomore TJ Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) also finished under the previous record, placing eighth in 8:37.04.

 

Junior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dematha) won the men's discus throw with an IC4A-qualifying heave of 49.01m (160'9"). Fellow junior Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) earned gold in the women's 100-meter hurdles in 14.72

 

Sophomore Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) finished second in the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 14.11m (46'3") and third in the discus with a mark of 37.65m (123'6").

 

Sophomore Shioma Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Preparatory/St. Francis College) earned silver in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.04m (46'0.75").

 

Sophomore Megan Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) and junior Keri Wilson (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) finished 1-2 in the women's 5000-meter run in 18:43.59 and 18:56.42, respectively. In the men's 5,000, freshmen Vinny Di Salvo (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and Nic Escobar (Derwood, Md./Magruder) placed fourth and sixth, respectively.

 

In the women's 400-meter dash, freshman Deborah Adelola (Lanham, Md./Bladensburg) earned bronze in 57.23, while fellow freshman Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K. Magnet) and junior Lauren Leclercq (Jessup, Md./Meade) placed fourth and seventh, respectively.

 

Seniors Keith Brown (Columbia, Md./McDonough) and Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)) finished third and fourth in the men's 110-meter hurdles in times of 15.20 and 15.38, respectively.

 

Onto earned silver in the men's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 55.77, while senior Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) took home bronze in 56.76. Sophomore Ashley Ajayi (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) earned bronze in the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.24.

 

Senior Jasmine Batchelor (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) earned bronze in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.52m (4'11.75"), while freshman Mo Drammeh (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) also finished third in the men's high jump, reaching a height of 1.93m (6'4").

 

Junior Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) crossed the line fourth in the men's 800-meter run in 1:55.30, while freshman Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) finished eighth in 1:56.64.

 

Senior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) finished fifth in the women's 100-meter dash in a time of 12.94, while junior Fallon Rovel-Jones (Owings Mills, Md./New Town) placed seventh in 13.14. Rovel-Jones also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

 

Freshman Kyle Baker (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished sixth in the men's 200-meter dash in 22.77, while he placed eighth in the 100-meter dash in 11.55.

 

The Retrievers return to action next Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
