Women's Tennis Wins Doubles Point, but Falls at Albany, 4-1
Albany, N,Y.- Visiting UMBC got off to a promising start, capturing the doubles point, but the host Albany Great Danes rallied in singles and defeated the Retrievers, 4-1, in a match between America East Conference rivals.
Sophomore Isabel Aldunate (Bowie, Md.) and freshman Madena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) breezed to an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 doubles position and the Retrievers secured the doubles as junior Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) and freshman Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) outlasted the Great Dane duo of Irene Santos/Cat Crummey, 8-5.
Cleary was able to win her first set at No. 6 singles, 6-4, but the match was abandoned when Albany post victories at Nos. 2,1,3 and 5 singles. Stange-Jonsson, who moved up to No. 3 singles, lost a tough 6-2, 7-5 decision and saw her three-match winning streak halted.
The Retrievers travel to Washington. D.C. to take on Georgetown on April 10.
