Women's Tennis Splits a Pair of Weekend Matches, Opening With a Shutout Over Drexel

The women’s tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend, blanking Drexel, 7-0, at 40 West Racquet Club on Feb. 23, before dropping a 5-2 decision to George Washington at Montclair C.C (Va.) the following evening.
UMBC now stands at 2-7 on the spring campaign.
The Retrievers captured the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Junior Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Valderas, Sweden) and Julia Sauer (Aschaffenburg, Germany) cruised, 8-2, at the No. 1 slot. Drexel would counter with an 8-6 victory at the No. 2 position, but sophomore Isabel Aldunate (Bowie, Md.) and freshman Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) teamed up for an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 slot to earn the point for the Retrievers.
Alduante posted an impressive victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Zyenep Mafa, 6-2, 6-2. UMBC won all six singles matches, highlighted by a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory by Sauer at No. 3 singles and a come-from-behind victory by Stange-Jonsson at the No. 4 position. She dropped the first set to Emma Brook, but rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Aldunate and Kuracz moved to 2-0 on the weekend as they triumphed at No. 3 doubles against George Washington. The Colonials evened doubles with a 8-1 win at the No. 1 position and rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take the No. 2 match, 8-5.
Kuracz improved to 4-0 on the weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 6 singles spot. Freshman Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) also earned a singles victory, outlasting Dorota Lysienia, 2-6, 6-3, (10-3) at the No. 5 position.
UMBC returns to action on Fri., March 1 when they face St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia.
