Danielsson, Stange-Jonsson Lead Women's Tennis at Hokie Fall Invitational

    Blacksburg, Va.- Veterans Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) and Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) each won three singles matches to lead the UMBC women’s tennis team at the Hokie Fall Invitational.

    In C Flight singles action, Danielsson dropped her first match, 6-4. 6-4 to Virginia Tech’s Tea Ivanovic, but won the consolation bracket with three victories. The senior defeated Annisha Domenech of Liberty, 6-2, 6-2 and advanced to the final match when Wofford’s Mareli Sanchez withdrew. Danielsson then knocked off Sanchez’ teammate, Audrey Coventry, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7).

    Stange-Jonsson won her first two matches in D Flight singles play. The junior defeated Radford’s Allison Mchael, 6-4, 6-2, and then got through a tough match with Armstrong’s Jessica Gardefjord, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. In that round, Stange-Jonsson fell to Middle Tennessee State’s Irina Constantinide, 6-1, 6-0, before winning an additional match, edging UNCW’s Hamilton Lovett, 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4).

    Sophomore Isabel Aldunate (Bowie, Md.) and freshman Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) also competed for the Retrievers.
