Flushing, N.Y.- Fresh off a win over 18-time defending America East champion Boston University, fourth-seeded Stony Brook edged No. 2 UMBC, 4-2, in the America East championship match at the United States National Tennis Center.

Stony Brook rallied to win three of four singles matches after the Retrievers had captured the doubles point. The match was decided at No. 2 singles, where UMBC sophomore Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) took her opponent to a pair of tie-breakers, but lost by the narrowest of margins, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).

Senior Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) was involved in a three-set match at the No. 3 position, and was even at 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 2-2 when the match was decided.

Berghaus and Jackman got UMBC on the board with a tight victory at No. 1 doubles, prevailing, 9-8. Graduate student Shalini Sahoo (New Dehli, India) and sophomore Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) opened doubles play with an 8-5 win at the No. 2 position.

Junior Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) recorded the Retrievers’ lone singles victory, triumphing 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 5 position.

The Retrievers completed the 2012 campaign at 15-8. Jackman, the lone senior, was 2-0 during her final competition.
