Women's Tennis Opens Texas Swing With 5-2 victory over UT-San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas- The UMBC women’s tennis team ran its winning streak to six straight with a 5-2 victory over the University of Texas-San Antonio on March 20.
The Retrievers are now 9-5 on the season, while UTSA falls to 7-6.
UMBC won the doubles point and clinched the match by winning the first three singles contests to be completed.
Grad student Shalini Sahoo (New Dehli, India) and sophomore Josefin Stange-Jon sson (Vasteras, Sweden) opened the proceedings by winning at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. After the hosts captured No. 3 doubles, sophomore Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and senior Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) won the deciding doubles match, 8-4, over UTSA’s top tandem.
Berghaus and Sahoo cruised at Nos. 1 and 2 singles respectively to give UMBC a 3-0 lead. Berghaus defeated. Stefanie Peana 6-1, 6-2, while Sahoo also only dropped three games in 6-2, 6-1 victory over a Isabelle Jonsson.
Stange-Jonsson clinched the victory for UMBC with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Natalie Hand at No. 6 doubles.
Junior Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) won UMBC’s fifth point, edging Irene Gonzalez, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) at the No. 5 flight.
The Retrievers return to action with a match at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday.
