Six Retrievers Earn All-Conference Honors in Women's Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—All six starters on the 2009-10 UMBC women’s tennis team earned America East All-Conference honors in a vote by the league’s head coaches.

 

Freshman Lorena Valente (Florianapolis, Brazil) received top honors, earned First-Team All-Conference honors in singles and Second Team All-Conference honors with senior Barbara Couto (Teresopolis, Brazil) in doubles.

 

Sophomore Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and freshman Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) also earned second team honors in both singles and doubles.

 

Senior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) and junior Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.) each earned second-team honors in doubles play.

 

Valente posted a brilliant 18-5 record, primarily at the No. 3 singles position. She was the America East Player of the Week on April 21.

 

Jackman compiled a mark of 13-11, primarily at the No. 2 slot, while Danielsson excelled in her first season, winning 14 of 23 matches at the No. 5 position.

 

All three Retriever doubles teams earned second team honors. The No. 1 duo of Chen and Danielsson, the No. 2 tandem of Jackman and Mannix and the No. 3 combination of Couto and Valente are helped UMBC to a 15-7 season.
