Women's Tennis Earns Fourth Seed, To Face No. 5 Albany in America East Quarters on April 30

    Cambridge, Mass.--The fourth-seeded UMBC women’s tennis team will take on fifth-seeded Albany the America East Conference quarterfinals on Friday, April 30 at Yale University. The match will get underway at 10:00 a.m. in New Haven, Conn.

     

    Should the Retrievers defeat the Great Danes, they would take on top-seeded Binghamton on Saturday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m.

     

    UMBC blanked Albany, 7-0, on March 28 at the UMBC Tennis Complex, but dropped a 5-2 decision at Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y. on April 10.

    Women’s Tennis Notes

     

    UMBC finished the season with a mark of 14-7, after debuting at 7-7 under head coach Rob Hubbard in 2009… Senior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) produced her best spring in singles, posting a record of 15-6, primarily at the No. 1 slot… Classmate Barbara Couto (Teresopolis, Brazil/Centrode Ensino Moderno), who played sparingly in her first three seasons, led the team with 33 spring victories… Couto was 16-6 in singles and 17-3 in doubles competition… She shared team honors in singles victories with countrywoman Lorena Valente (Florianopolis, Brazil/Corocao de Jesus), who was 16-5… The program’s all-time record at the Division I level is 252-173 (.593).
