Danielsson Rally Lifts Women's Tennis to 4-3 Victory Over Delaware in Home Finale
BALTIMOREóFreshman Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) recovered from a one-set deficit and her singles victory gave the host UMBC women's tennis team a 4-3 victory over Delaware in the Retrieversí final regular season match of the season.
UMBC's women improved to 14-7 on the campaign, while Delaware slipped to 12-6.
The Retrievers dropped the doubles point, losing 9-7 decisions at the Nos. 1 and 2 slots. In their final home matches, seniors Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) and Barbara Couto (Florianapolis,Brazil) posted straight set victories. Chen defeated Megan Doran, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, while Couto triumphed over Kristen Mueller, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
No. 3 freshman Lorena Valente (Teresopolis, Brazil) won a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Montse Ripoli, but Delaware won at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, setting up Danielssonís dramatic comeback. She lost the first set, 5-7, to Amanda Halstrom, but took the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3 to give the Retrievers their second 4-3 victory over the season.
UMBCís first win of the year was a 4-3 triumph over James Madison on January 16.
The Retriever men have one more home match against George Washington on April 24, while the women will prepare for the America East Championships beginning on April 30 in New Haven, Conn.
