Women's Tennis Blanks Towson, 7-0

    BALTIMORE—The UMBC women’s tennis team won for the seventh time in eight matches, as they blanked local foe Towson, 7-0, in ideal conditions at the UMBC Tennis Complex.

     

    The Retrievers are now 11-5 on the campaign, while Towson dropped to 3-11.

     

    UMBC captured the doubles points by winning all three matches. The Brazilian duo of Barbara Couto/Lorena Valente won, 8-0, and improved to 13-2 this spring.

     

    Freshman Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) led off the singles for UMBC with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Beth Davis at the No. 5 position. Junior Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.) defeated Katy Young, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and sophomore Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) sewed up the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Laura Cloonan.

     

    Couto triumphed, 6-1, 6-3, over Kristie Udovich at No. 6 singles and senior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) defeated Aandria Carr, 6-0, 6-4.Valente ended the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Andrea Samlin.

     

    UMBC is back in action on Saturday, when they entertain Coppin State in a 1:00 p.m. matinee.
