Women's Tennis Upends Towson, 6-1

Towson, Md.—The women’s tennis team completed its season-opening five game road swing with a 6-1 win over local rival Towson. The Retrievers (2-3) will host their first match of 2009 tomorrow when Quinnipiac is slated to visit.
UMBC captured the doubles point, as the No. 2 team of Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) and Ana Mungo (Summit, N.J.) triumphed, 8-1, and the No. 3 team of Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Lauren Hamilton (Yardley, Pa.) won an 8-2 decision. The No. 1 team of Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md.) and Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md.) won a tie-breaker, 7-4, after the doubles set was tied at 7-7.
The Retrievers breezed in their four of their five singles wins. Top-seeded Mungo won a 6-2, 6-0 decision over TU’s Caitlin White, while No. 4 Jackman and No. 5 Mannix each won identical 6-1, 6-3 decisions. Hamilton triumphed at the No. 6 slot, edging Ashley Peretz, 6-2, 6-4.
