Men's Tennis Upsets Army in Coach Rob Hubbard's Debut

2/2/2009

The UMBC men’s tennis team made head coach Rob Hubbard’s debut a successful one, as the Retrievers upset Army, 4-3 in West Point, N.Y. on Sunday, Feb. 2. The Cadets were ranked No. 15 in the Northeast regional rankings.

Senior Nick Savage-Pollock (Montreal, Quebec) won the deciding match, triumphing, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. UMBC had taken the doubles point, as the No. 1 squad of Savage-Pollock and Fredi Voorman (Talinn, Estonia) edged their counterparts, 8-6, and the No. 2 duo of junior Chris Meyer (New Market, Md.) and freshman Allen Tsang (Wellesley, Mass.) posted an 8-4 victory.

Voorman and Tsang won their singles matches, as the veteran triumphed, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and the newcomer posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 5 slot, setting the stage for Savage-Pollock’s clinching match.

“As is normally the case in a 4-3 decision, the doubles point weighs heavily and today our doubles teams came through in a big way," Hubbard said. “"It was a great team effort as we upset Army, the 15th ranked team in the region, for the first time in school history.  I am very proud of all of the guys and the effort they put on display today."

The women’s tennis team also opened its 2009 campaign as they competed at the Cornell Invitational this weekend. UMBC dominated the C singles flights, as three of the four semifinalists were Retrievers. Freshman Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md.) defeated sophomore Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.), 6-1, 6-3 in the finals, after Mannix had edged freshman Lauren Hamilton (Yardley, Pa.), 6-1, 6-4 in the semis.
