Vestal,N.Y.—Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams pulled out 4-3 victories over conference rival Stony Brook in matches played at Binghamton University on Sat., April 12. The men have now won six straight matches to improve to 13-4, while the women are on a 10-match winning streak and improved to 11-3.

Matches scheduled between UMBC and Binghamton on Friday were postponed due to rain.

On the men’s side, UMBC (13-4) swept the doubles matches to take that point, but dropped the first two singles matches at Nos. three and one to fall behind, 2-1. UMBC senior David Jackson evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Stony Brook’s John Epstein, but junior Nick Savage-Pollock was edged, 6-4, 6-4 by the Seawolves’ Alex Markovic. The Retrievers pulled out the match with straight set wins by No. 5 sophomore Fredi Voorman and No. 6 senior Fernando Ferreira. Voorman knocked off Ivan Rummel, 6-0, 6-4, while Ferreria dispatched of Patrick Baldock, 6-0, 6-2.

The women’s match followed a different script as the Seawolves swept the doubles matches to go ahead, 1-0. But UMBC won two of the three singles matches that went to three sets and four overall to nip SBU. Senior No. 3 Pascaline Cette (6-4, 6-1 over Sandy Wijerante) and junior No. 4 Cornelia Carapcea (6-4, 7-6 (5) over Fanny Charliquart) won their matches in straight sets and freshman No. 1 Ana Mungo and junior No. 5 Joy Adewumi prevailed in three sets. Mungo edged Paola Radolfi, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, while Adewumi dropped the first set, but rallied to defeat Erica Federgreen, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Retrievers.

The women host Delaware on Monday and both teams complete their regular seasons at Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday.
