New York, N.Y.—The UMBC women’s tennis team (0-2) dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 9.

UMBC lost the doubles point, as the No. 2 squad of Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) and Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.) won an 8-6 decision, but Columbia triumphed at the Nos. 1 and 3 slots.

Freshman No. 1 Ana Mungo (Summit, N.J.) and senior No. 4 Pascaline Cette (Menton, France) won their singles matches in straight sets and No. 6, junior Joy Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) prevailed in three sets, defeating Natalia Christenson, 6-0, 6-7 (6), 6-0. Sophomore Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md.) dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles, while Mannix was edged, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the No. 5 slot. The pivotal match occurred at No. 3 singles, where Carapcea lost a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 decision to Carling Donovan.

“We are making progress as a team,” head coach Keith Puryear said. “The effort today was good, but we are still looking to do a better job with our execution at times. We had some great individual performances. Ana Mungo had a great win at number one singles, as did Pascaline Cette and Joy Adewumi at numbers four and six. But the doubles point proved critical. We are still looking for better doubles play as a whole.”
