Freshman Chris Meyer Wins Second Title of the Fall; Captures B Flight at Hampton Roads Invitational

    Hampton, Va.—Freshman Chris Meyer (New Market, Md./Urbana) the “B” Flight singles bracket of the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational of Newport News this weekend.

     

    It is Meyer’s second tournament victory this fall, as he won the Flight C singles in the Cornell Invitational in his collegiate debut.

     

    Meyer cruised through his first three matches in straight sets before facing David Tillem in the semi-finals. He dropped the first set, 6-3, but took the second, 7-5 and won a tense tie-breaker, 11-9, to prevail. In the finals, Meyer met Jason Hill of Navy and took the first set, 6-4. He was leading the second set, 2-0, when Hill retired with an injury, giving Meyer the title.

     

    The A flight doubles tandem of juniors David Jackson (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and Irfan Shamasdin (Ontario, Canada) won a pair of matches and reached the finals before falling to the team of Smith/Tarr, 8-5.

     

    The women’s team performance was highlighted by the play of junior Pascaline Cette (Menton, France) in the B singles flight. Cette won three matches to move into the finals before falling to Barbara Zidek, 6-1, 6-1.

     

    The teams will compete in the ITA Regional Championships this weekend.
