Baltimore, Md.—The men’s tennis team played its first home match of the season and edged Quinnipiac, 5-2, in howling winds at the UMBC Tennis Courts. The Retrievers improved to 4-6 on the season. In women’s action, Quinnipiac nipped a depleted UMBC squad, 4-3. The Retrievers, down to four available players, had won two straight, but fell to 2-8. The matches were played despite winds that gusted over 40 miles per hour. Today’s matches vs. Georgetown has been posted due to continued high winds in the area. On the men’s side, UMBC took the doubles point, winning all three matches, including a nail-biting 8-7 win by the No. 3 team of Fernanda Ferreira and Lief Hollowell. Three of the six singles matches went three sets and UMBC prevailed in two of the three. At No. 3, sophomore David Jackson dropped the first set, 7-5, but defeated Stefano Salvatore, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Nick Savage-Pollock split sets with Jonathan Russo at No. 4, but captured the third set to triumph, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Ferreira won in straight sets at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1, while sophomore Irfan Shamasdin earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position. On the women’s side, the visiting Bobcats won the doubles point, but UMBC, playing with only four athletes, earned wins at the top three singles positions. UMBC had to default at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles, and junior Elizabeth Anderson dropped a tough three-setter to Amanda Petruzzi, 7-5, 0-6, 6-3.
