Strong Singles Efforts Lead Women's Tennis Past Seattle, 5-2

Reno, Nev. – The UMBC women's tennis team won singles matches one through five and defeated Seattle, 5-2, at Reno High School on Sunday, March 16.

UMBC (6-6) dropped the double point, but did not drop a set in the first four singles positions to clinch the match. Senior Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) set the table as she defeated Anna Lambert, 6-2, 6-3, at the number one position. Sophomore Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) only dropped four games in a convincing 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Gabriella Weissman at the No. 4 position.
Freshman Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) won the battle at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3, over Kelli Woodman and sophomore Isabel Aldunate (Bowie, Md.) won a tough first set and took her No. 3 singles contest, 7-5, 6-1, over Barbara Anne Carey.
Senior captain Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) provided insurance with a three-set victory at the No. 5 position. Stange-Jonsson, who is 2-0 in singles on the western trip, rallied to edge Sarah Lucas, 5-7, 7-6 (10-8), 10-5.
