BALTIMORE- The UMBC women's tennis team will be the No. 3 seed in this weekend's America East Conference Championships, which are being held at the UMBC Tennis Complex. The Retrievers will open play on Saturday, April 27 when they take on No. 2 seed Albany. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
No. 1 and defending champion Stony Brook will take on the winner of match between No.4 Binghamton and No. 5 Hartford (10:00 a.m. Friday) in the first semi-final match at 10:00 a.m.
UMBC will look to knock off the Great Danes behind the play of Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) . The junior was an impressive 11-3 this season at No. 4 singles. Senior and countrywoman Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) finished the season strong, winning a pair of matches vs. league foe Binghamton.
Albany enters as the No. 2 seed after some impressive victories during the regular season. The Great Danes went 3-1 against conference opponents this season and the play of Rocio Lopez Alberca. After transferring from Georgia Tech, the junior was 15-4 in singles play including a 13-4 combined mark between No. 1 and 2 singles.
UMBC won the doubles point, but the host Danes defeated the Retrievers, 4-1, when the two teams competed in Albany on April 7.
The championship match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
