Women's Tennis Sweeps CAA Foes in Sunday Doubleheader

BALTIMORE- The UMBC women's tennis team won a double-header against a pair of Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Twin Lakes Racquet Club. The Retrievers blanked Hofstra, 7-0, in the morning and defeated Towson, 6-1, later that afternoon.

UMBC evened its 2012 record at 5-5.

"The women bounced back decisively after last week's near upset of ODU," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "They had a very good week of practice leading up to the matches and their results were evident of that.

UMBC won all three doubles matches vs. the Pride, then grad. Student Shalini Sahoo (New Dehli, India) got singles off to a roaring start with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sonia Tsay at the No. 2 slot. No. 1 sophomore Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Elena Ivanova and senior Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Malissa Gilanchi at No. 3 singles.

The match with the Tigers went along the same lines, as the Retrievers sewed up the doubles points with identical 8-4 victories by the top two tandems. Berghaus and Jackman combined at the No. 1 position to defeat Ariel Burke/Avana Dow, and Sahoo teamed with sophomore Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) to defeat Andrea Samlin/Encarnacio Lizana.

Sahoo continued her dominance in singles, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Aandria Carr at the No. 2 hole. After Berghaus defeated Lizana, 6-3, 6-1, Jackman again clinched the triumph with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Nisha Shah.

"The women had strong efforts and improvement in their doubles play that, hopefully, we can continue to build on," Hubbard said.  "Our singles play also showed strong improvement as we won some very tough matches in convincing fashion.  We look to carry forward these efforts into the match with Liberty March 7th."

The match vs. Liberty is the first schedule home match to be played at the UMBC Tennis Complex.
