UMBC sophomore tennis standout Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) has been ranked No. 111 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the Jan. 3, 2012 rankings.
Berghaus, who was named the 2011 America East Conference's Rookie of the Year, is also ranked No. 20 in the Atlantic region.
Last spring, Berghaus won 10 singles matches for the Retrievers, including seven from the top spot. She reached the 20-win mark, posting records of 11-4 in doubles and 11-6 in singles. She competed primarily at the No. 1 singles position for head coach Rob Hubbard's squad.
In the season opening match at Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 21, Berghaus and Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) upset the No.7-ranked doubles team in the region (Penn State's No. 1 duo),8-5.
"We are very proud of Kim and her much-deserved preseason rankings," Hubbard said. "Since Kim arrived on campus in 2010, she has been a model of hard work and focus. Not only is she achieving great things on the court, but she is excelling in the classroom as well with over a 3.8 grade-point average in physics. Kim is truly a UMBC scholar-athlete."
