Women’s Tennis Grad Student Shalini Sahoo Voted UMBC Athlete of the Month for March

BALTIMORE – Grad student Shalini Sahoo (New Dehli, India/TCU) of the women's tennis team was named UMBC's Athlete of the Month for March 2012 in a poll conducted from Apr. 10-17.  Sahoo received 72% of the vote, to win the vote over women's lacrosse's Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees), men's lacrosse's Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn School), softball's Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), track and field's Mercedes Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington) and baseball's Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep).

During the month of March, Sahoo went 7-0 at the No. 2 single position for the Retrievers and was 14-2 this season through Mar. 31, including a nine match winning streak. 

In the Retriever's tight 4-3 win over Longwood on Mar. 11 in Spartanburg, S.C., Sahoo teamed with Josefin Stange-Jonsson to help UMBC claim the doubles point, and then won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. 

Later in the month, Sahoo picked up two more victories, again matched with Stange-Jonsson in doubles, to help the Retrievers claim a 5-2 decision over the University of Texas – San Antonio on the road.
