Kim Berghaus Selected to America East Tennis All-Academic Squad

Cambridge, Mass.- Sophomore Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany/ Leibnizgymnasium) was selected to the America East Tennis All-Academic squad, the league office announced today.

 

Berghaus, the 2011 America East Rookie of the Year, went 19-11 at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and led the Retrievers in total victories with 40 in 2011-12.

 

She earned America East first team accolades in doubles play, teaming with senior Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) towinning 22 of 32 matches at the No. 1 position. The tandem won matches in both the semifinal and title matches at the America East Championships.  

Berghaus also earned second team all-conference honors in singles.   

 

UMBC women's tennis has produced the league's top scholar-athlete five times in nine years of competition.

 

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time, for example, six student-athletes in the sport of tennis. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
