The UMBC women's tennis team kicked off its fall campaign by competing in the Georgetown Classic on Sept. 24-25 in Washington, D.C.
Sophomore Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) won three matches and advanced to the title match, before having to retire due to injury. In her first match, Berghaus defeated Schulman of Lehigh, 10-1, before knocking off a pair of Georgetown players to reach the finals. She dropped the first set to eventual champion Tina Tehrani of Georgetown, but was leading in the second set before suffering the injury.
Grad student Shalini Sahoo (New Dehli, India) reached the semifinals with a pair of victories before falling, 6-1, 6-3 to Tehrani.
In doubles action, the Retriever duo of Berghaus and senior Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) reached the title match, but withdrew due to Berghaus' injury.
UMBC will next compete at the Navy Invitational on Oct. 14-17 in Annapolis, Md.
