Blacksburg, Va.—UMBC's women's tennis team competed at the 17th annual Hokie Invitational on Oct. 1-3.
Sophomore Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) advanced to the quarterfinal round in Flight E singles with a victory over Alexandra Smyth of Richmond, 6-3, 6-3. She combined with senior Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.) to reach the semifinal round in Flight C doubles. The Retriever duo won matches over Louisville (8-6) and James Madison (8-3) before bowing, 8-2, to the Virginia Tech team of Blow/Conley, 8-2.
Freshman Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) won her opening match at Flight A singles, defeating Jordan Jenkins of Liberty, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-0 and teamed with junior Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) to edge Virginia Tech's team of Betts/Blakely, 9-8. Jackman also prevailed in her opening round Flight B singles match, defeating Ruxandra Andriescu of James Madison, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
But neither player could advance in either singles or doubles competition.
Sophomore Julia Gregara-Cano (Badajoz, Spain) opened her UMBC career with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 come-from-behind win over Penn State's Fernanda Perrotta at Flight D doubles, but dropped a 6-4,6-1 decision to Elizabeth Sims of Richmond.
Freshman Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) fell in her opening match at Flight F singles, but did win a pair of matches in the consolation round.
