BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) of the women’s swimming and diving team was named the UMBC Athlete of the Month for February 2013, in a poll conducted from Mar. 1-11. Bean won the vote over men’s swimming’s Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College), track and field’s Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone), men’s basketball’s Brian Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), and women’s basketball’s Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American).
Bean is the second straight member of the women’s swimming and diving team to win the honor, following senior Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin Britten/New Orleans) who was named the January Athlete of the Month.
At the America East Championships in Orono, Maine (Feb. 14-17), Bean won her first conference title by besting the field in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 267.45 in the finals. She also garnered a silver medal in the 3-meter event, and as a result was named the America East Most Outstanding Female Diver of the Year.
During the dual meet season, Bean won a total of four events and was named the conference Female Diver of the Week three times.
