BALTIMORE – UMBC senior captain Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin Britten/New Orleans) of the women’s swimming and diving team was named the UMBC Athlete of the Month for January 2013, in a poll conducted from Feb. 1-8.  Barron won the vote over men’s swimming’s Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College), women’s basketball’s Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American), track and field’s Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone), and men’s basketball’s Brian Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy).

During the month of January, Barron led the Retrievers with a team-best four dual meet victories as UMBC went 2-1.  In addition, she was a part of five victorious relay squads as UMBC swept the relay events against Old Dominion, Loyola, and East Carolina.  For her efforts, Barron was named the America East Female Swimmer of the Week twice, first on Jan. 15 after the ODU meet, and then again on Jan. 29 following the meet with ECU.

As a co-captain for the Retrievers, Barron led UMBC to a 5-3 dual meet record.  For the season, Barron picked up six individual event wins while aiding ten relay teams to victory.
