Swimming and Diving Announces Captains for 2012-13 Season
Senior Co-Captain Claire Barron
Senior Co-Captain Jennifer Kotonias
BALTIMORE - Seniors Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross), and Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin Britten/New Orleans) have been named captains for the 2012 - 2013 season, head coach Chad Cradock announced Thursday afternoon.
“I am excited for the newly appointed captains and look to them as a great source of leadership,” Cradock said. “They are already fulfilling that role and the team is excited because of what they bring to the table.”
For the men’s team, Eckhoff has been named a captain for the second consecutive year. Last year as a junior, he broke the UMBC school record in the 3-meter diving competition by scoring a 354.30 against Towson. That record did not stand long, however, as Eckhoff broke his own record later in the season, posting a score of 361.20 at Drexel. He also led by example in the classroom, as he was named the America East Swimming and Diving Scholar Athlete.
“There is no question about how hard Andrew works,” said Cradock. “He gains tremendous respect from his peers for the amount of time and effort he puts forth.”
Last season, Kotonias was named an Honorable Mention on the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-America List. In addition, she won eight individual events during the season, including five wins in the 200 fly. At the conference championships, Kotonias won a silver and a bronze medal in the 200 fly and 400 IM, respectively.
Barron meanwhile helped both the 200-yd. and 400-yd. medley relay teams win gold at the America East Championships. She also won three individual events during the Retrievers' dual meet season.
“Both of these girls do a great job of leading by example and standing up for what is right, and the team recognizes those leadership qualities in both of them,” said coach Cradock.
UMBC opens the 2012 season against Rider on Saturday, Oct. 13 for Parents Weekend at the newly renovated UMBC Natatorium.
