McKenny Breaks 100 Free Record, Five Qualify First as Swimming and Diving Completes Final Prelim Session and America East Championships

BOSTON—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have five top qualifiers going into the final night of the 2010 America East Swimming and Diving Championships in Boston on Sunday.

 

Sophomore Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) broke a UMBC record in the women’s 100 free and will be the top qualifier in the final. She will be joined by senior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee), while junior Erin Wohlers (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) and sophomore Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach) will compete in the consolation final.

 

Senior Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) is the top qualifier for the women's 200 fly in an NCAA-provisional qualifying time of 2:00.39. She will be joined by four more Retrievers, including senior Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity), junior Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) and freshmen Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md/Academy of Holy Cross) and Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas).

 

In the men’s 100 free, junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) is the top qualifier with a time of 45.46, while senior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) is seeded third in 45.82. They will be joined in the final by sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and freshman Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson), while fellow freshman Herol Marjak (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Sec Science School) will swim in the consolation final.

 

In the women’s 200 back, sophomores Laura Tilman (Miami Springs, Fla./Ransom Everglades) and Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) will compete in the finals after posting times of 2:05.88 and 2:09.40, respectively. Junior Julie Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and sophomore Kelsey Fitzpatrick (Delran, N.J./Delran) will swim in the consolation final.

 

Sophomore Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) will compete in the men’s 200 back final after winning his heat in 1:50.91 and will be joined by junior Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute). Fellow junior Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre) will compete in the consolation final.

 

In the women’s 200 breast, seniors Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) and Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) will be the top qualifiers after finishing 1-2 in Heat 3 in 2:19.80 and 2:20.28, respectively. Junior Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) will compete in the consolation final.

 

Sophomore John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) qualified second for the men’s 200 breast after winning his heat in 2:04.86. Seeded right behind him are senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and junior Dan Weston-Dawkes (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake), while fellow junior Phillip Novotny (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) will also compete in the final.

 

In the final event of the prelims, Junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) is the top qualifier in the men's 200 fly in a time of 1:50.52. He is followed by freshman Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md/Richard Montgomery) and sophomore Ben Wolbert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster). Freshman Alex Moothart (Hopkinton, Mass/Hopkinton) will compete in the consolation final.

 

The finals start at 5:30 p.m. with the Top 8 seeds in the 1,650 (mile) free.
