Swimming and Diving Looks to Defend Titles at Patriot Invitational This Weekend

BALTIMORE—The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travel to Fairfax, Va. this weekend and look to defend their George Mason Patriot Invitational titles. Last year, the women scored 861.5 points to claim their second title in three years, while the men tallied 1,177.5 points on their way to their third straight crown. The action starts Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

 

Senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won three individual and one relay races last week in the men’s 152-148 win over Maryland. He set UMBC season-best times in the 100 breast (57.73), 200 breast (2:07.95) and 200 IM (1:52.71). The 200 IM time was over four a half seconds faster than his previous best time this year.

 

On the women’s side, senior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) set UMBC season- best marks in the 200 breast (2:23.11) and the 200 IM (2:09.14), both of which she placed third.

 

The Patriot Invitational marks the last meet of the 2009 portion of the swimming and diving season.
