BALTIMORE--Former Retriever swimmer Mike Stambaugh has been named assistant director of aquatics and assistant coach for the UMBC swimming and diving program, head coach Chad Cradock announced today. He will also serve as the head age group coach for the Retriever Aquatic Club.
Stambaugh is an accomplished coach at the club and secondary levels with multiple swimmers achieving Junior National, US Open, and USS National qualifiers, as well as numerous All State, All Americans, Pennsylvania State Champions, District III Champions, and Berks League Titles.
The native of Reading, Penn.’s coaching experience includes a seven year stint with Muhlenberg Swimming Association and Muhlenberg School District including five as the head age group coach, four years as the assistant head coach of Albright Aquatic Club, and five as the assistant at Schuylkill Valley High School. In addition, he was also the head women’s water polo coach for Muhlenberg High School for two years.
Stambaugh formerly held UMBC records in the 50 freestyle, 100 free, 100 backstroke, 200 back and a part in all five relays. His 50 time of 20.47 is still second all-time in school history. Before coming to Baltimore, he was a three-time All-State and All-American swimmer in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back.
He was nominated as a member of the Pennsylvania Berks County Swimming Hall of Fame in 2002 and has served on the Hall of Fame committee for the last 4 years.
Stambaugh and his wife, Rochelle, have three daughters, Jada, 8, Hanna, 7, and Lexi, 3.
