Petar Trifonov joined the Retrievers inthe summer of 2009 as the head diving coach.
During his time in Baltimore, Trifonov has helped lead theRetrievers to a total of four conference championships with themen’s team reclaiming the America East title in 2012-13 witha meet-record 1,075 points. In addition, Trifonov guided aschool-record four divers in their qualification for the NCAA ZonesMeet.
Under Trifonov’s tutelage, Andrew Eckhoff swept the twodiving events at the America East Championships in 2012 and 2013,earning Most Outstanding Male Diver accolades each year. Inaddition, Eckhoff broke the school record in the 3-meter eventduring his junior year, and qualified for the NCAA Zones meet bothseasons.
Trifonov has had a decorated diving career, winning more than 50national championships in his native Bulgaria and culminating in anappearance in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
After he finished his competitive career, Trifonov became arecognized judge and coach. He judged the USA Diving NationalChampionships from 2001-05, and last year was a judge at the FINAJunior Diving World Championships.
Trifonov’s coaching career includes stints at the Collegeof William and Mary and American University, and was the head coachof the Montgomery Dive Club team in Rockville, Md., for eightyears.
In addition to coaching at UMBC, Trifonov will be the head coachof the Retriever Dive Club, which will be geared for youth diversin the Baltimore area.
